The client’s key requirements were for a social coffee table, that worked as both a functional coffee table and also offered a space for people to play board games. It also required some storage which was suitable for crafts.
To allow flexibility between these requirements, I considered the space that the table is used in. Separating the square form into two rectangles allows the table to be within easy reach when used in conjunction with the two sofas, but creating a unified surface when joined together for games. A tertiary function is produced by a removable tray formed from the top half of the shelf, which allows for easy storage.
